Matagami

At the 50th parallel, at the western gateway into the region of Eeyou Istchee Baie-James, you'll find Matagami with its sparkling lakes, endless wide open skies, centenerian forest, and the chiselled outline of Mont Laurier crowned with taiga. Matagami, which means “where the waters meet” in Cree, is a place that brings together two different worlds. Nine major bodies of water are located in close proximity to Matagami.

Whether you're a passionate angler or hunter, an open-air enthusiast or just passing through our beautiful region, Matagami has a great deal to offer, including a wide range of activities for all tastes and interests.

Matagami, founded in 1963, owes its origin to mineral exploration. However the Matagami territory was occupied long before the arrival of Europeans. In the 17th century, the Cree in the region established the fur trade with the English at Baie-James and the French at Abitibi and Témiscamingue.
