Chapais

The community of Chapais is located in the heart of the boreal forest. The history of the community goes back to 1929, when prospector Leo Springer discovered major copper, silver, and gold deposits here. Set in vast, pure, and dynamic natural surroundings, Chapais is an outstanding year-round vacation destination for people who love open-air activities.

Chapais was incorporated in 1955. It diversified its economic activities with the opening of a sawmill in 1974, which allowed the city to survive the exodus of part of its population following the closure of the mine in 1991. Later, Québec's first cogeneration plant was built here to make optimal use of the area's forest biomass. This facility produces electricity using waste products from the sawmills, an eco-friendly power generation alternative solution. In recent years, the population has become increasingly involved in developing the area's tourism attractions to boost and diversify the local economy. Chapais truly is an outstanding vacation destination.

Other sites at the entrance of the city include the presence of a small mining museum, which is a unique cultural stop where visitors can learn about the origins of Chapais.
